"Gould's career as a symphonic composer began with the première by Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra of Chorale and Fugue in Jazz (1933). Spirituals, his first work to enter the orchestral repertory, was first performed by Gould himself at a New York festival in 1941; performances followed shortly afterwards by, among many others, the New York PO and the Cleveland Orchestra."
