- Mercadante
Francesca Donato. Scena e cavatina Qui dove l'aura Tonia Eseguita dalla Sigra Tadolini. 1f. (title), 5, [i] (blank) pp. musical manuscript. Copy of the Neapolitan edition issued by Girard ca. 1850.

Oblong folio. Contemporary quarter dark green leather with textured paper boards, titling to decorative spine gilt. Engraved throughout with the exception of two lithographic titles. With contemporary manuscript index to first leaf.

Binding considerably worn, rubbed and bumped with significant paper loss to upper. Occasional foxing and other minor defects. The scores are generally good strong impressions on quality paper.

Quite an interesting collection of Neapolitan musical imprints.

The Girard edition of Verdi, while dated based on Hopkinson's estimations, quite likely dates from slightly earlier in light of the fact that Girard customarily issued editions of the operas very soon after their first performances. The catalogues found as part of selected imprints support this and are, in themselves, quite important documents. There are five such catalogues present in the collection dated from the period 1842 to1845.

The presence of editions published by Fabricatore is also notable, especially the excerpt from Verdi's Alzira, which was unknown to Hopkinson at the time he compiled his Verdi bibliography. While the music publishing history surrounding the Ricordi firm is relatively well documented, that for the important Nepolitan publishers is far less so. Hopkinson proposed that in the case of Verdi at least, the Girard piano-vocal opera scores were most likely made and edited from manuscript full scores in the Naples Conservatory of Music rather than the published Ricordi editions. See Hopkinson: Bibliographical Problems concerned with Verdi and his Publishers. I Congresso internazionale di studi verdiana: Venezia 1966 p.434.
