"The Russian years contributed significantly to his growth as an interpreter of great music and as a composer; these were the years when he wrote the Etudes-caprices op.18, the Polonaise brillante op.21 and his finest work, the Second Violin Concerto in D minor op. 22. He played it for the first time in St Petersburg on 27 November 1862 under the baton of N. Rubinstein, and two days later Cui, a severe critic, wrote to his friend Balakirev: ‘I still haven’t recovered from the impact of that first Allegro’."
