English-born Adelaide Phillipps was the first American to have a fully rounded operatic career, both in Europe and later in the United States. A genuine contralto, she studied with Manuel Garcia, debuted in Italy, and sang at the Théâtre-Italien in Paris and in other world capitals before returning to sing in the United States. Paul J.
