Russian baritone George Cehanovsky "made his début in St Petersburg where he sang Yevgeny Onegin and Valentin in Faust, fleeing to Constantinople after the Revolution and then to the USA. After a period with the Baltimore Civic Opera he joined the Metropolitan in 1926. During his 40 seasons there he sang 97 roles (mostly comprimario) in over 2000 performances in New York and on tour, remaining as Russian coach until he was over 90. His first wife was the soprano Elisabeth Rethberg. Though his serviceable voice is heard on many Metropolitan recordings, he is probably best remembered as one of those whose vitality and goodwill help to make all who work in a great international house feel that they belong to a company."
