Bernhardt's reputation as a dramatic actress earned her the nickname "The Divine Sarah," and she has been called "the most famous actress the world has ever known." She rose to fame on the French stage in the 1870s, and soon became highly sought-after in the rest of Europe and the Americas. She was also one of the pioneer actresses of silent film.
