An opera in 5 acts to a libretto by Barbier and Carré based on Goethe's Faust and Carré's Faust et Marguérite, Faust was first performed in Paris in 1859 and went on to open the inaugural season at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1883, starring the brilliant Swedish soprano Christine Nilsson.
