Roméo et Juliette was first performed at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris on 27 April 1867. The opera was "Gounod's most spectacular immediate success. Coming as it did during the Exposition Universelle of 1867, when Paris was invaded by visitors from the provinces and abroad, the opera drew full houses for many consecutive nights. It started its rapid conquest of foreign stages at Covent Garden on 11 July 1867 and before the end of the year had been seen at major centres in Germany and Belgium."
