Zaide, a Singspiel to a libretto by Johann Andreas Schachtner after Franz Joself Sebastiani's Das Serail, was first performed in Frankfurt on January 27, 1866. Adding an overture and finale, and new text by Friedrich Carl Gollmick, Johann André completed the opera. Other versions followed, in German, French, and English, often with additional music from Thamos, König in Ägypten (K 345/336).
"Although not viable as it stands, Zaide marks a striking advance and at its best reaches the level of Mozart’s maturity." Julian Rushton in Grove Music Online.
