First performed at the Grand Theatre in Lyons on 8 February 1879.

Saint-Saens and Gallet took as subject matter for their historical drama the life of Etienne Marcel, hero of the 1358 popular rebellion during the regency of the Dauphin Charles. The subject held contemporary resonance in the rebuilding of Paris following the destruction of the Commune.
