Jooss was an important German ballet dancer and choreographer, especially noted for integrating classical ballet and theatre. He studied under and danced lead roles in Rudolf von Laban's choreography in the early 1920s. He left Germany in 1933 when the Nazis asked him to dismiss the Jewish members of his company and he refused. After touring in Europe and America, Jooss founded a school at Dartington Hall. He established a number of dance companies over the course of his career, and is commonly considered to be the founder of "dance theatre" or "tanztheater." Wikipedia. Item #27725
