Armide, to a libretto by Quinault after Torquato Tasso’s epic poem Gerusalemme liberata, was first performed in Paris at the Opéra on February 15, 1686.
"Armide represents Lully and Quinault’s style at its most mature. As in Roland, Quinault’s exploration of a character’s inward conflict is subtly complemented by the details of Lully’s music. The recitatives contain a greater degree of rhythmic and tonal subtlety than those in any previous opera, and 18th- century observers recognized this feature, praising Armide as a model of expressive text declamation.
