La roi di Lahore, to a libretto by Louis Gallet, was first performed in Paris at the Opéra on April 27, 1877.
"... given a première production of well-documented lavishness at the Palais Garnier (which had opened only two years previously),[La roi di Lahore] firmly established the 34-year-old Massenet as a successful composer of opera... It was a two-year wonder in Paris, with 57 performances before it lapsed from the repertory, and within five years of the première it had been staged throughout Europe and in South America."
