First performed in Paris at the Conservatoire on January 4, 1846, revised in 1871.

"Although probably conceived in the summer of 1843, [Franck's] first large-scale work, the biblical oratorio Ruth was not completed until 1845 for during this time the pressure of engagements had resulted in a serious illness." John Trevitt and Joël-Marie Fauquet in Grove Music Online. The first performance of 1846 was reportedly not terribly favourably received, but the revision of 1871 met with greater success.
