San Francesco d'Assisi mistero, to a libretto by the composer after St Francis and J. da Todi, was first performed in a concert version in New York at Carnegie Hall on 29 March 1922 and in a staged performance at Perugia at the Sagra Musicale Umbria on 22 September 1949.

Malipiero "was the most original and inventive Italian composer of his generation ... An apparently more drastic departure from his own preceding methods can be seen in San Francesco d’Assisi, in which his longstanding interest in early music, from plainsong to Monteverdi, is reflected in a much more thoroughgoing manner than it had been in parts of Sette canzoni." John C.G. Waterhouse in Grove Music Online.
