Written for the world-famous cellist Yo-Yo Ma, the present work was commissioned by the San Francisco Symphony and first performed in San Francisco by the San Francisco Orchestra in 1994. Both the first and second cello concertos have been recorded by Mr. Ma with the Philadelphia Orchestra under conductor David Zinman; that of the first concerto won three Grammy awards.
