Liszt's transcription of Beethoven's Adelaide (Op. 46; 1795) was the first of many arrangements he made of Beethoven's songs. He dedicated the work to the Marchese Maria Martellini, an Italian noblewoman who was one of Liszt's early supporters and patrons.
