I Capuleti e I Montecchi, in two acts set to a libretto by Felice Romani, premiered in Venice at the Teatro la Fenice on March 11, 1830.

Bellini revised the work later that year, lowering Giulietta's role for mezzo-soprano Amalia Schütz. In 1832 Maria Malibran, in the role of Giulietta, added the final act of Nicola Vaccai's "Giuliette E Romeo", a convention followed in later productions, including this one. In the production represented by this libretto, mezzo Amalia Schütz returned to the opera, this time as Romeo. Item #31724
