Russian composer Isaak Dunayevsky's operetta Vol'nïy veter (Free Wind) premiered in Moscow on August 22, 1947. The Hungarian translation by György Hámos (Szabad szél) was performed at the Budapest Operetta Theater in 1950.
Dunayevsky achieved numerous successes in the Soviet Union with his musical comedies and popular songs. Vol'nïy veter won the Stalin Prize and was the first Soviet work to be performed at the Hungarian theater. It is set in a fictional country (easily identified as Yugoslavia), and the comic scenarios and folk songs are entwined with less-than-subtle political statements against western imperialism.
