Die lustige Witwe (The Merry Widow), composed to a libretto by Victor Léon und Leo Stein after Henri Meilhac's L'attaché d'ambassade (1861), was first performed in Vienna at the Theater an der Wien on December 30, 1905. The English-language version opened in London on June 8, 1907, and then in New York City on October 21, 1907.
