Portrait postcard photograph of the noted Austrian tenor, with autograph signature

Half-length. From the studio of Hugo Erfurth in Dresden. 135 x 85 mm.

Inscribed and signed in full in black ink on recto, dated Vienna 1922.

Quite worn, soiled, and faded; corners chipped; small hole and cracks to upper right corner and small hole to upper left corner, not affecting image or signature.

Tauber began his career performing leading lyrical roles, but found international fame as an operetta star. He was featured prominently in the works of Lehár, his close collaborator and friend. Tauber was a composer himself, penning three operettas and numerous popular songs.

"Tauber’s successful career is chronicled on numerous recordings. The earlier ones prove what a sterling artist he was in a wide variety of operatic roles. His later recordings include, besides lieder, many operetta numbers and popular songs, in which he evinces an innate gift for turning dross into gold." Desmond Shawe-Taylor in Grove Music Online

Hugo Erfurth (1874-1948) was one of the most prominent German portrait photographers of the early 20th century.
