Princess Pauline von Metternich commissioned Lehár to write a waltz for her “Gold and Silver” Ball in 1902. While attracting little attention at the event itself, the work quickly became a hit on both sides of the Atlantic. It was the first major success for the fledgling composer, and a sign of what was to come.
