The text of Herzgewächse (Foliage of the Heart) is by Maurice Maeterlinck, translated by Karl Klammer and Friedrich von Oppeln-Bronikowski. The arranger, Felix Greissle, was Schoenberg's son-in-law.
"The vocal part is perhaps the most technically difficult in Schönberg’s entire oeuvre; the scope lies initially within the low octave range, but soon leaps much wider.
