"Der Wein was the stylistic forerunner of Lulu, as, in a more modest way, the second Storm song had been the forerunner of the Lyric Suite. That this kinship with Lulu is more than a conjectural assumption a posteriori is shown by the choice of the text of the Aria, by its basic organization and by its colour and scoring."
