DESSY, Giovanni Battista 1834-1918
Don Martino d'Aragona [Solo piano]. [Cagliari?]: A Piras, [1858?]. 105 pp. Lithographed.
The solo piano arrangement of this work, an opera by Sardinian composer Giovanni Battista Dessy, is of particular interest. While the "Ave Maria" from the opera is known in its arrangement as a solo organ piece, no score of the opera seems to have been published. We have been unable to locate any other copies of this arrangement, nor of any other music printed by Piras. Don Martino d'Aragona was Dessy's first successful opera, and it allowed him to travel to Naples to study with Mercadante. On his return to Cagliari, he was appointed concert master of the Teatro Civico and eventually became its director. Dessy was one of the most important 19th century composers in Sardinia, yet he is virtually unknown today.
