French issue of the revised edition by Jurgenson, who published the first edition in 1868 and then this revised edition with corrections by the composer in 1888. Vajdman ČW 98-99, p. 508. Poznansky TH 124, p. 308. French publisher Félix Mackar purchased all rights to print Tchaikovsky's works in France and Belgium in 1885, reprinting many of the Jurgenson editions with the Mackar imprint.

The Scherzo à la Russe was dedicated to Nikolai Rubinstein (1835-1881), who premiered the work in Moscow on 31 March 1867. The second piece, Impromptu, was included as part of Op. 1 by accident, being in the same notebook as the Scherzo.
