Cavatina. Ah quanto e mai difficile. [Musical manuscript]. Italy, ca. 1800-20

Oblong folio (ca. 235 x 330 mm). Sewn. [1] (title), [23] pp.

Scored for violins 1 & 2, clarinettes 1 & 2, Horns 1 & 2, viola, basso, and bass voice. Notated in black ink on 10-stave rastrum-ruled paper in a rough, unpracticed hand.

Slightly worn; minor soiling to outermost leaves; some creasing and showthrough.

RISM records 8 manuscript copies of which three are attributed to Giovanni Liverati; two to Antimo Liberati (1617-1692); a version transposed to Bb major attributed to Johann Simon Mayr (1763-1845); and a version with guitar accompaniment attributed to Valentino Arcari (fl. 18th c.).

While the attribution of this work is problematic, its popularity through the 18th and 19th centuries is clear from the dissemination in aria and song collections and its insertion into operas by various composers throughout the period.
