Original full-length portrait drawing of Grieg conducting by the noted French painter and illustrator Abel Faivre (1867-1945)
Signed by the artist at lower right. Undated, but ca. 1890. Executed in black and red crayon on lightweight wove paper. 380 x 265 mm.
Slightly worn and browned; tear to upper left corner repaired; remnants of mounting paper to edges of verso.
Grieg was the foremost Scandinavian composer of his generation, actively promoting the music of his native Norway. While he led a busy life composing, he also devoted considerable energy to conducting; he helped found the Christiania Music Society for the promotion of orchestral music in 1871.
Faivre is possibly best-known today for his designs for French World War I posters, examples of which are held at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the British Museum in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Chicago Art Institute.
