An American violinist of Hungarian birth, Szigeti, a child prodigy, moved to Budapest to study with Jenö Hubay, following which he embarked on an international concert career. He was a champion of new music and the dedicatee of many contemporary works; among the pieces written for him are Bartók's Rhapsody No. 1, Bloch's Violin Concerto, and Ysaÿe's Solo Sonata No. 1.
