A German-born American conductor, Hertz went to the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1902, "making his début with Lohengrin and staying until 1915 as principal conductor of German opera. There he conducted ... the first Parsifal ..., the American premières of Salome and Der Rosenkavalier, and the world premières of Humperdinck’s Die Königskinder and of all the American works brought out during his time there."
