The Firebird (L'Oiseau de feu; Zhar-ptitsa), a fairy tale ballet in two scenes, was first performed by Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in Paris at the Opéra on 25 June 1910, conducted by Gabriel Pierné. The original choreography was by Michel Fokine, with sets and costumes by Alexandre Benois; this seminal work led to further important Stravinsky-Diaghilev collaborations including Petrushka (1911) and The Rite of Spring (1913).
