Item #40868 Sonata per Violino e Basso. [?Autograph musical manuscript]. Giovanni fl. 1810 RAIMONDI.
Sonata per Violino e Basso. [?Autograph musical manuscript]

Sonata per Violino e Basso. [?Autograph musical manuscript]

Italy: ca. 1800.

Oblong folio (232 x 327 mm). Sewn. Notated in black ink on 10-stave rastrum-ruled paper. [i] (title), 6, [i] (blank) pp.

Outer leaves soiled and stained, with several small tears to edges, detached; moderate foxing, mainly to blank outer margin.

The present sonata appears to be unknown. Not located in OPAC SBN. Schmidl records a collection of studies for violin in 13 parts in the library of the Milan Conservatory.

With "Originale" to title, indicating that the present manuscript is, in all likelihood, in Raimondi's hand.

Composed in three movements, Moderato, Adagio, and Allegro Assai. The Moderato (cut time), is in a binary form with repeats; it is a somewhat classical sonata form with flashes of virtuosity, a cantabile opening, and passages in double stops. The Adagio (cut time) features suave slurred scalar passage and a gently pulsating bass line. The closing Allegro Assai (2/4) is the most virtuosic movement, with daring leaps, very high notes, and bounding arpeggios.

A well-made and compelling bravado violin sonata.
