The Mass for four male voices and organ was composed in 1846-47 and was first performed in 1852 in Weimar "to celebrate the birthday of the President of the French Republic - later the Emperor Napoleon III. This is an unusual and austere work in which singers effectively declaim, not sing, parts of the Credo. The melodic line of the Gloria reveals the influence of plainchant." Collet: Franz Liszt. The Man & His Music, Alan Walker, ed., p. 340.
